Course summary

Computational simulation of structures (CSM), fluid dynamics (CFD) or multi-disciplinary systems has become essential in all areas of engineering. Today’s pace of design and innovation in industry is only possible with extensive use of these numerical methods. In academic engineering research, scientific computing plays an essential role and enables a level of understanding that is not reachable by experiments alone. Successful Computational Engineers and Scientists need to have a solid knowledge of the engineering discipline they work in, but also of the modern numerical methods and the computational environments that are used. The MSc in Computational Engineering provides all these skills. You would join with good knowledge in at least one of these three areas, you would deepen that understanding and you would gain the required knowledge in the other areas. You will be able to choose study modules that align with your background, your choice of specialisation area and your project topic. This programme will teach you advanced skills in computational modelling of structures and fluids. You will be introduced to programming and numerical algorithms, a particular strength of the course is its broad teaching of numerical optimisation, a topic of significant industrial interest. You will choose specialisation modules in one of Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical or Energy engineering. A unique feature compared to other UK MSc programmes is the year-long project which counts for 50% of the course. Your project can use our high-performance computing clusters, where possible the topic will be defined in conjunction with an industrial co-supervisor. Our academic staff are involved in internationally recognised research in a wide range of topics, including: • Aerospace engineering • Energy generation and conversion, including alternative and sustainable sources • Heat transfer and fluid mechanics • Control engineering • Robotics • Chemical engineering

This course has a subject classification which requires students whose nationality is outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland to have an ATAS certificate, irrespective of country of residence at the point of application.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements This programme requires ATAS clearance. Students who are not EEA or Swiss nationals may require ATAS clearance to undertake this course. The JACS code for this course is H300. Further information on ATAS can be found on our Advice and Counselling webpages. An undergraduate degree (minimum good second class honours or equivalent) in a mechanically-based engineering subject or equivalent. Each application is individually assessed; you are recommended to contact us for guidance in specific cases. IELTS 6.5 is required. International applicants: Students from outside of the UK help form a global community here at Queen Mary.
