Course summary

Our state-of-the-art simulation facilities and placement opportunities with Midlands NHS Trusts and non-NHS providers give you the ideal preparation for a rewarding career in nursing – and an opportunity to transform the way people are cared for in the future. Our BSc (Hons) Nursing course is integrated for the first two years of the course meaning that, for university-based activities, all fields of nursing work together. Your final year of study will be specific to whichever field you have chosen to specialise in – Adult, Child, Learning Disability or Mental Health. You will gain essential hands-on clinical skills through placements, all of which will be specific to your chosen field of nursing, and develop your skills in demonstrating care and compassion that reassures patients/service users and their families that a professional is at their side. You will learn how to assess, implement, plan and evaluate care for patients in a variety of settings during your training. We have strong links with some of the largest NHS Trusts in the country, including University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust, so you will gain a variety of experience and have access to a network of invaluable contacts. Adult Nursing Throughout the course, you will develop a range of clinical skills and the underpinning knowledge to prepare you to meet the holistic needs of a diverse adult population. In addition to the core modules, you will undertake four adult field-specific modules and be assessed in a range of clinical placement areas across the West Midlands to develop your role as a competent practitioner. Foundation Year The Foundation Year option gives you extra time and support to help you build your knowledge, skills and confidence before starting a full degree. It is designed to prepare you for a range of nursing courses, not one particular BSc degree, so you will study a broad range of subjects to prepare you to continue on to successful BSc level study. You'll develop a range of practical and analytical skills that will prepare you for a challenging and rewarding career in nursing. Upon completion of your Foundation Year, if your chosen course is regulated by a professional body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council, you will be required to successfully complete the University’s selection process for the specific programme which will include an interview in order to proceed onto year one of the full degree programme. Entry onto year one of the degree programme will also be subject to a satisfactory DBS and Occupational Health Assessment and spaces available on the course.

More about foundation year programmes By studying a foundation year in either Health and Life Sciences, Children, Childhood and Education or Sport and Exercise Science, your first year will be spent learning a wide range of broad subject areas which then open up opportunities for you to specialise further in your next year – which would be the first year of a full degree programme. You will study very broad subjects in your foundation year, which is designed to prepare you for a range of courses and not just one particular BSc or BA degree. So although you are studying a BA or BSc in a specific course – for example, Children’s Nursing, Health Studies, Midwifery among many of possible options – the foundation year sets you up for a number of other possible degrees starting the following year. It may be that you don’t end up doing a degree in precisely the same subject as your foundation year. This flexibility is one of the great things about foundation year categories (Health and Life Sciences, Childhood and Education or Sport and Exercise Science), allowing you to find out more about your interests and talents before focusing on a three year degree. The foundation year also helps us at BCU to make sure we help to match you to the degree that fits you best. Important Note: Upon completion of your Foundation Year, you will be required to successfully complete the University’s selection process for the specific programme which will include an interview in order to proceed onto year one of the full degree programme. Entry onto year one of the degree programme will also be subject to a satisfactory DBS and Occupational Health Assessment.
