Course summary

This route offers you a four year (full-time) degree course, which will include opportunities for you to engage with the subject area of your choice, to select from a range of subjects to broaden your knowledge and understanding, and will provide structured study skills support as you build your confidence to study at degree level. You will be taught alongside other students studying the Foundation Year from Social Sciences, Languages & Linguistics, Education, Religion & Philosophy and Media. The Foundation Year is delivered across three 10 week terms. Where possible we focus teaching on a single day, to permit flexibility, and give you plenty of time to engage in other supported learning activities and enjoy the range of resources and activities available to you. Levels 1-3 are timetabled across the full week and run across two semesters. You will have the opportunity to explore a variety of academic disciplines, encountering a wide range of subjects and ideas. You will engage in a range of teaching and learning activities, including lectures, seminars, group work, workshops and online learning. Passing your first year guarantees progression onto any of our undergraduate degrees offered with an integrated Foundation Year. If you wish to study two academic subjects in depth our Joint Honours degree programmes are a great way to do this. Combining Film Studies and English Literature degree programmes at York St John University provides you with an opportunity to study the genres, social and historical contexts, pleasures and the politics of film, whilst also exploring how stories work, how they appeal to us, persuade us and affect us. When studying English Literature and Film Studies you will investigate the ways in which these two forms of storytelling have blended with one another for almost a century. This will include the study of the adaptation process which includes a range of literary forms such as the novel, plays and comic books. You will also consider the film industry and the ways in which historical fiction is used to make the British film industry a global presence and the ways in which cinematic universes (such as the Marvel universe) draw upon the traditions of the graphic novel which has recently dominated popular cinema. You will be equipped with the tools to analyse and critically engage with cinema of different genres, styles, periods and world sites vis-à-vis a range of cultural forms such as visual art, interactive media and literature. The Film Studies Programme can be studied as a single subject as well as alongside other programmes (Media and American Studies).
