Course summary

You can study this Mathematical Sciences MSc programme full-time or part-time. It offers students the opportunity to specialise in a broad range of areas across pure and applied mathematics, statistics and probability, and theoretical physics. The topics we cover include:

  • advanced probability theory
  • algebra
  • asymptotic methods
  • geometry
  • mathematical biology
  • partial differential equations
  • quantum field theory
  • singularity theory
  • stochastic analysis
  • standard model/string theory.
By completing the first semester you qualify for the PG certificate. By completing the second, you qualify for the PG Diploma. Then, by completing your dissertation, you qualify for the MSc. You will need a 2:1 Honours degree in Mathematics or with Mathematics as a major component. Why Department of Mathematical Sciences? Range and depth of study options We offer a very wide range of modules, from advanced algebra and geometry, to partial differential equations, probability theory, stochastic analysis, and mathematical physics. With these you can tailor your programme to specialise in one of these areas, or gain a broad understanding of several. This allows you to build up the required background for the project and dissertation modules, which offer the opportunity to undertake an in-depth study of a topic of your choice, supervised by a leading expert in the field. Exceptional employability At Liverpool, we listen to employers’ needs. Alongside key problem solving skills, employers require strong communication skills. These are integral to this programme. Graduates go on to research degrees, or become business and finance professionals, or to work in management training, information technology, further education or training (including teacher training) and scientific research and development. Teaching quality We are proud of our record on teaching quality, with five members of the Department having received the prestigious Sir Alastair Pilkington Award for Teaching. We care about each student and you will find the staff friendly and approachable. Accessibility We take students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds and we work hard to give everyone the opportunity to shine. Supportive atmosphere We provide high quality supervision, teaching and IT support. You will benefit from the friendly and supportive atmosphere in the Department, as evidenced by student feedback available on our university website. A common room and kitchen for the exclusive use of the Department’s students, and a lively maths society help to foster a friendly and supportive environment.

Modules

Students choose three optional modules in the first semester and two optional modules in the second semester. In total, at least three optional modules must be at master's level; these have codes beginning with 'MATH4' in the list below. Every effort has been made to ensure that all the information below is correct at the time of publication. However, changes to our academic provision are always possible, and modules may be deleted or replaced with other modules in future years. Most options are available every year, but a small number are only available in alternate years.

How to apply

International applicants

Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines. English language qualifications All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language and are required to provide evidence of this. Qualifications accepted by the University can be found on our International webpages. Please see www.liv.ac.uk/international for English Language requirements specific to your country. If you meet the academic requirements of the course but do not have the required level of English Language, it is possible for you to come and study at the University on one of our Pre-sessional EAP programmes. Please see the English Language Centre website for further information about these programmes; www.liv.ac.uk/english-language-centre/pre-sessional-eap. If you require additional English Language training during your study, the University is able to provide tuition and arrange IELTS tests through its English Language Centre, details of which are available at www.liverpool.ac.uk/english-language-centre.

Entry requirements

Applications are welcome from students who have (or expect to obtain) an Honours degree in Mathematics. The usual minimum requirement for entry is a 2:1 degree classification, but we consider all applications on their individual merits, taking the transcript, references and personal statement into account. Applicants who have degrees with Mathematics as a major component (e.g. physics or engineering) are also welcome to apply. In this case we may look for higher marks to offset the lower number of credits earned for mathematics modules. International qualifications: Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines.
