Course summary

Plymouth College of Art has been granted full university status and formally recognised with the new title of Arts University Plymouth, following approval by the Privy Council. This makes us the City of Plymouth’s first specialist arts university. The title of Arts University Plymouth signifies a change to the way that the world will see us, our position within the sector and the mobility of our graduates; but not a change in the way that we see ourselves or what we do. Arts University Plymouth will build upon the existing strength of our unique culture and incredible community; we have no plans to change the specialist focus of the work we do together. The name Arts University Plymouth will appear on our qualifications, making it easier for employers and peers to recognise that our students were taught at a leading specialist arts university. In May 2022 we were awarded the Best Small or Specialist University at the 2022 WhatUni Student Choice Awards, coming top in a list of well-respected specialist UK universities, based on unbiased and honest reviews from students across the UK, in a category that highlights the quality of our provision as a specialist creative university. BA (Hons) Graphic Communication is an ambitious course that responds to the opportunities presented through emerging communication methods. It supports the development of specialist and generalist approaches to graphic communication, with a focus on the opportunities afforded by advances in new technologies alongside those offered by traditional or hybrid approaches. Graphic design is a central component in the course, but this forms part of a wider understanding and application of expanded communication methods through graphic means.

  • Our staff are practising designers, with experience in design, typography, publishing, branding, photography, printmaking and more.
  • Explore both traditional resources and digital technology to support your creative design thinking.
Effective communication is essential if we are to face the many challenges in front of us as a global community. Graphics is an international language with which to create 360 degree communication with each new generation. Working with both physical and digital resources, you will forge your own professional journey within an ever expanding communication landscape. You will have opportunities to explore motion, print, social and interactive media, to produce powerful and meaningful graphic content. We work with design agencies and public communication voices regionally, nationally and worldwide on commercial campaigns and social media. Recently our students have worked with JDO Raw, Atlantic Youth Creative Hubs, Plymouth Design Forum, Upshot Design Agency, Creative Conscience, Getty Images, Trevor Pettit, and Ramuntcho Matta. This course was previously titled BA (Hons) Graphic Design. The new title reflects the inclusion of a broader range of communication methods available using modern technology.

Modules

Our three-year programme includes guest lectures from renowned speakers and visits to start up agencies culminating in a major exhibition of work on a national platform in London. You’ll gain skills and knowledge while developing your creativity and understanding of the wider professional context. You will also get the chance to exercise your entrepreneurial ambitions and work directly with live clients and global design studios, and generate your own saleable design projects. Our graduates do fantastic things - from creating designs for The Rolling Stones and Katy Perry to working with Wu-Tang Clan and Nine Inch Nails.
