Course summary

This Sociology and Criminology and Criminal Justice degree provides a deeper understanding of our world and the people who share it, with a focus on crime and disorder. The course draws on concepts, themes and perspectives from all three disciplines to explore and explain how crime affects us as both a society and individuals. You will investigate how the structure, organisation, groups and bodies within society relate and respond to crime, offending behaviour, victimisation, social harm, social control, punishment and crime prevention. You’ll be taught by academics with expertise in topical areas like identities (race, democracy, nation), social issues (housing, inequality), crime and justice, media, political action and technology. Combining the areas of Sociology and Criminology and Criminal Justice gives you an insight into the key challenges in understanding, controlling and responding to crime and criminal behaviour. This aims to develop the skills and knowledge to evaluate and create innovative future solutions for society. You will analyse social, cultural and other circumstantial factors that contribute to a person committing crime. You’ll also question the effectiveness of arrangements and activities such as victim support, crime prevention, law enforcement and rehabilitation of offenders back into society. ‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time.
