Course summary

Develop in-depth skills in computer science and prepare to work with cutting-edge technologies in industry by blending theory with practice on this advanced qualification that will make you stand out to employers. As part of this course, you’ll: • Study some of the principles and technologies that are dominant within the ‘fourth industrial revolution’ • Identify, explore and develop radical applications of technology, such as smart automation and development of cloud-based services • Address some of the areas within STEM, contextualising knowledge to real-time scenarios and application to problems in industry • Build on your existing knowledge of software engineering, networking systems, communications, systems development, cloud computing, robotics and artificial intelligence • Develop project management skills as well as professional and technical attributes While Computer Science traditionally contains a lot of theory, our approach is very applied, and you’ll be encouraged to think about problem solving in an industrial context. Drawing on expertise from within the School of Built Environment, Engineering & Computing, you’ll be directed and motivated to work on advanced concepts in computer science, including for your dissertation. Specialist facilities Our state-of-the-art facilities provide the foundation for developing your passion for computer science into skills and learning for life. You’ll perform practical work in sandboxed labs with full administrator access and our own Cloud infrastructure with remote access to software. To help with your learning, you’ll also have access to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Industry expertise You’ll have access to guest lectures hosted by leading industry practitioners, who will share their knowledge and expertise. On completion of this course, you’ll be able to: • Reflect upon technological advancements and apply expert knowledge to real-life complex computational problems • Use originality in the application of knowledge in a professional environment • Evaluate and critique methodologies, practices and advancements within the field of computer science • Demonstrate self-direction, originality and creativity in tackling and solving practical computer science related problems


Entry requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Computer Science, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional.


English language requirements

Please note the IELTS requirement for this course are IELTS 6.5 with no skill below 5.5.
