Course summary

This programme builds on your previous experience of studying sport enabling you to become a graduate in sport and exercise science. On this course you will be given the opportunity to examine practical, professional and theoretical elements that influence sports and exercise performance, participation and health. You will also explore how the very best practitioners improve sporting performance and how they are able to make life changing interventions for those suffering from obesity and other poor health related conditions. Why study this course? Modules are vocationally relevant, ensuring that our graduates are in the best position to pursue careers in their chosen profession. The course content is informed by relevant professional bodies including the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), the Association of Physical Education (AfPE), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the European College of Sports Science (ECSS). You are taught by active researchers who apply their expertise in the world of sport. The lecturers on this course regularly present at international conferences and provide sports science support to elite level athletes. You will engage in practical and sport and exercise-based laboratory-based work. You are encouraged to develop your own areas of academic research and relate your studies to practical sports situations. What does the course cover? On this degree you will explore all the major sub-disciplines associated with sport and exercise science. This will include modules in sports and exercise psychology, exercise and sport physiology, performance analysis and biomechanics. You will gain an understanding of the different scientific theories that can be applied in sports science and become an expert in making use of scientific methods of enquiry, interpreting and analysing scientific data and using a range of the latest technologies in sports and exercise science in our human performance laboratory. You will also develop the skills needed to monitor and evaluate responses to sport and exercise effectively. As well as enhancing knowledge and experience of sport and exercise science, you will develop skills in communication, leadership, ICT, time management, organisation, critical thinking, presentation, problem solving, data handling and project management.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

All applicants will need to have 120 credits at level 4 and 120 credits at level 5 in a relevant Foundation Degree or HND. Applicants should normally achieve 80% merits (minimum) in the final year. Applicants should also hold GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths (or equivalent awards). If your application meets our entry requirements, you may be invited to attend an interview. All applicants intending to progress directly onto level 6 are required to attend and pass a bridging module prior to enrolment. This module focuses on research methods and academic writing. Applicants not achieving pass this module will enter the programme at level 5 (second year of the degree programme). please refer to the Newman University website for details.
