Course summary

Noted for depth, breadth and innovation, the research output of our historians covers a vast range of topics. Our research expertise extends from ancient to contemporary times; Britain to America, the Middle East, Asia and Australia; and from political history to economic, medical and environmental history. In particular, the History Department has special strengths in culture and politics; identities; gender and power; and ideas, belief and societies. The department includes the following research centres: Centre for Minority Studies Centre for South Asian Studies Centre for the Study of the Body and Material Culture Hellenic Institute Holocaust Research Centre Postcolonial Research Group


Entry requirements

Normally an Upper-Second Class Bachelor's degree, or a Master's degree, in a related subject. For the MRes we require a good undergraduate degree in History or a cognate subject (usually of a British 2.1 or above standard). Non-standard backgrounds may be considered. For the MPhil/PhD we normally require a good Masters degree in History or in a subject that is cognate with History (such as Politics or English Literature). There are minimum English language requirements for overseas students in line with general admission policies to the college.
