Course summary

Examine how life and the systems within it exist at a molecular level to make exciting advances in medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. Discover the fascinating complexity of the human brain, from investigating how the brain controls our body to neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Our Biochemistry and Neuroscience BSc will provide you with the skillset required to enter a variety of careers or advance to further study. Why choose this course?

  • Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology
  • Top 10 in England for Biochemistry (National Student Survey, 2021)
  • Top 20 in the UK for Neuroscience (Guardian University League Table, 2021)
  • Develop your practical skills in Keele's state-of-the-art laboratories
  • Gain practical experience of human neural anatomy in Keele Medical School's Anatomy Suite
Biochemistry modules cover five core themes: macromolecular structure-function, metabolism and its control, genetics, cell biology and the applications of chemistry in the study of these. The course will give you a broad and varied grounding in modern biochemistry, as you explore the structure and function of biological molecules and metabolic processes, core chemical concepts and their application to the biological sciences and molecular cell biology. In neuroscience you will explore a mixture of core modules that will provide you with a grounding in basic biological techniques, an introduction to the core concepts of the subject and the practical skills required for a career within the field. You will gain a much deeper understanding of neuroscience as you advance through our Biochemistry and Neuroscience degree. Typical topics of study include how the brain develops, the mechanisms underlying learning and memory, how drugs affect the nervous system, the anatomy of the human and animal nervous systems, and how electrical activity in the brain works to control function. About Keele Keele University was established in 1949 by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. Founded to meet the needs of a changing world, Keele has always had a pioneering vision to be a different kind of university. We excel in both teaching and research, with some of the most satisfied students in England, and research that is changing lives for the better at a regional, national and global level. Our beautiful 600-acre campus is one of the biggest in Britain – but all the most important services and facilities are on your doorstep, with accommodation, teaching spaces, facilities including a medical centre, sports centre and pharmacy, and a range of shops, eateries and entertainment venues – including the Students’ Union – clustered around the centre.
