Course summary
Are you looking to understand the most pressing security challenges of the 21st century? Would you like to be part of the solution to these global problems? Our BA International Security Studies provides you with the theoretical and practical tools to address key political and security issues of our time and devise strategic solutions to a complex geopolitical environment. From terrorism and civil wars to cyber-warfare and disaster management to interstate rivalries and national security, our modules promote an understanding of fundamental issues and debates connected to contemporary global politics and security. These are complemented by modules that provide regional insights into the politics of the Middle East and Africa, the EU as a global power, and much more. Upon graduation, you'll have specialised knowledge and the transferable skills and confidence you need to succeed. In addition, studying abroad is a great experience to add to your CV.
Modules
In year one, you will typically take modules which are designed to introduce you to key concepts and theories in international relations. You can explore geopolitical and security challenges, key political ideas and historical developments that have shaped the contemporary global security environment, and issues in Britain and abroad. Year two may cover global security and politics in the 20th century. You also get more choice through optional modules. You may decide to focus on politics in China or national identity. In year three, you will have the option to write a dissertation based on a topic of your choice under the supervision of a member of staff. You may also choose from a wide range of modules related to our research areas, which cover a broad range of international security issues. You can tailor the course to your interests and career aspirations. For example, you may choose to focus on African politics, political violence or race and politics.
