Designed through research and collaboration with the UK’s leading law firms and employers, our LLM SQE1&2 prepares you for both the SQE1 and SQE2 exams, while building the additional practical knowledge and skills that we know the legal profession is looking for. SQE1 Preparation SQE1 Preparation focuses on the legal practice areas of what is collectively known as Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK). FLK is assessed in SQE1 which comprises two papers: FLK1 and FLK2. FLK consists of core areas of law covered in your law undergraduate degree or conversion course, plus the practice subject areas which you will learn in SQE1 Preparation. What you’ll revise: • Contract (FLK1) • Tort (FLK1) • Criminal Law (FLK2) • Land Law (FLK2) • Trusts (FLK2) What you’ll learn: • Business Law and Practice (FLK1) • Dispute Resolution (FLK1) • Criminal Law and Practice (FLK2) • Property Law and Practice (FLK2) • Wills and the Administration of Estates (FLK2) Legal Services (FLK1), Professional Conduct (FLK1&2), Taxation (FLK1&2), and Solicitors Accounts (FLK2) will also be covered together with helpful revision materials for the Legal System of England and Wales. SQE2 Training SQE2 Training will build on the foundations laid in SQE1 Preparation and develop your understanding of key assessment criteria featured in the SQE2 exam. You will develop the following skills that align to the areas of practice assessed in SQE2: • Case and matter analysis • Client interviewing and attendance note writing • Advocacy • Legal research • Legal writing • Legal drafting • Negotiation skills Essentials for Practice Having been informed by research and collaboration with a range of employers (including some of the UK’s leading law firms) this module offers three distinct pathways so you can develop the specialist additional knowledge and skills you need to thrive in practice, beyond the basic SQE curriculum. You can choose the pathway that best aligns with your career aspirations. Pathway 1: Advising Companies and Commercial Organisations You can develop a wide range of in-depth legal knowledge that is critical for commercial practice. You’ll understand and advise on the types of legal and commercial issues that impact businesses, including: • How commercial disputes are resolved • The types of issues that arise when entering complex commercial contract • The full range of legal and commercial issues (including IP, employment, property and planning) on which you might need to advise in a company commercial context Pathway 2: Advising Corporates You will develop knowledge in the core areas of law and practice that are important for anyone joining a City/corporate practice, advising national and international companies and financial institutions on a range of legal issues that affect their businesses. This will include: • How public and private companies raise capital through the sale of shares or through debt financing • How companies are bought, sold and restructured Pathway 3: General Practice You will develop in-depth legal knowledge and skills which will fully prepare you for a broad range of practices. You’ll develop an understanding of: • Litigation in relation to personal injury and medical negligence, considering both claimant and defendant perspectives • Employment law – contracts, procedures and disputes • Legal issues that arise following the breakdown of marriage and relationships Whichever pathways you select, you will also study an additional Business of Law module, which develops your wider knowledge and skills and builds your understanding of the role of technology in the delivery of legal services. During this module you will also be introduced to the O Shaped 5 Os and 12 Attributes and will consider how these are relevant in practical real-world legal case studies. Using a reflective portfolio, you will develop your skills in becoming client and people-centric, developing a growth mindset needed to thrive in today’s legal services market.

Assessment method

Internal assessments on this course count towards your Master’s award. For the SQE1 Preparation, you’ll sit multiple-choice assessments. These are written in the same style as the SQE1 papers and reflect the required knowledge you will need to pass the external assessment. You will also be required to submit a portfolio of skills and a reflective statement to demonstrate development of your core legal skills. SQE2 Training will be assessed through both a personal development plan, identifying areas of good practice and areas of further development in preparation for the SQE2 assessments, and a 4,500 word personal reflective statement with a supporting portfolio of evidence. For Essentials for Practice, there are a variety of assessment formats to measure the development of your specialist knowledge and practice-focused skills. These include both questions that require long-form answers and multiple-choice questions, along with activities that mirror legal practice scenarios and a reflective statement on a portfolio of work. The cost of the external SQE exams is not included in your course fees.
