At our Ofsted 'Outstanding' Institute of Education here at Winchester, we know how important it is that teachers are autonomous, innovative, critical and reflective practitioners. Our intent is to develop outstanding teachers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond to the reality of the classroom and enable all children to grow and learn. Our BA Primary Education with QTS is a dynamic 3-year undergraduate Initial Teacher Education degree. The programme's first year provides a secure basis for practice across the full primary curriculum and the 3-11 age phase. In the second and third years of the programme, you will focus on the 5-11 age phase. Our modules give you the opportunity to learn the full breadth of the national curriculum, with an in-depth focus on a specific subject, AEN or Early Years. Modules also cover topics such as leadership and the critical exploration of AI as a teaching and learning tool to ensure you are equipped to succeed in schools in the future. Our programme effectively blends theory and practice, providing you with the knowledge, understanding and skills for your future teaching career. You will develop a strong understanding of important, pertinent research and consider critically important pedagogical theories. Your work on campus is enhanced and developed through a series of school placements and Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP) weeks, where you will develop a reflective approach to your practice and the ability to work flexibly, responsively, and effectively in the classroom. Your professional placements will typically take place across different schools and key stages so you benefit from a breadth of experience. Our course provides the opportunity to learn to teach in a stimulating and supportive environment from tutors with extensive expertise and experience. We are also proud of our extensive range of resources available to students. You leave the programme as an outstanding teacher with the skills, knowledge and motivation to empower and educate others.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)

Applicants who wish to apply for advanced standing (exemption from part of a programme) based on previous study are considered on an individual basis. Applicants are required to provide transcripts. confirming the module titles and grades they have already achieved, as well as module handbooks and/or programme specifications showing the learning outcomes of the modules completed.

International applicants

We accept a wide range of non-UK qualifications and use UK NARIC (National Recognition Information Centre) guidelines to confirm their equivalence.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

The Department for Education has withdrawn the requirement for applicants to complete literacy and numeracy Skills Tests. During the selection process and as part of your training, you will be required to demonstrate competency in Fundamental skills in English and mathematics. Applicants are required to hold a minimum of 2 x A-level or equivalent qualifications (e.g. 2 x BTEC National Subsidiary Diplomas) and we accept all A-level subjects, including Critical Thinking, General Studies and own-language A-levels. We welcome applicants who have completed the Extended Project (EP/EPQ) and points obtained from this qualification will be included in any offer. In addition, we accept a maximum of 32 points from level 3 qualifications below A2 that are included in the tariff (e.g. AS-levels not studied at A-level, music or dance qualifications). If you are a mature student, your application will be considered on its individual merits and work or other professional experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of other published requirements.

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)

Applicants to this course are expected to obtain Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance prior to beginning the course at the University. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about when and how to obtain this clearance after an offer has been accepted. Please note, the cost of the check is covered by the applicant. If you have already have a DBS check and are signed up to the Update Service we will ask you to provide the original DBS certificate after an offer has been accepted. If you have lived or travelled abroad in the past five years, we will also need you to apply for an Overseas Criminal Records check for each country in which you have spent six months or more.

Health checks

Interview

Applicants to this course are expected to attend an interview at the University. Our Admissions Team will be in contact with further information about the format of the interview if your application is shortlisted.

Other

We will look for evidence of a commitment to the teaching profession, an understanding of professional requirements, and an awareness of current educational issues in an application. Prior experience in a school is not required, however prospective students may find experience in a school useful for obtaining insights into the primary education classroom. Experience in a school or similar setting may also provide reassurance to prospective students that teaching is the right choice for their career. Applicants will be expected to complete a period of two weeks school experience after interview, and prior to joining the programme.
