  • Focus on modelling real-world scenarios and unstructured problem solving
  • Graduate with broad range of transferable skills to succeed in a variety of careers
Mathematics can be related to almost every aspect of the world we live in. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure you have a solid grasp of the fundamentals of the discipline, so you can apply these principles to the real world. Our programme provides a broad coverage of the three main discipline areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. By following the Applied Mathematics pathway, your third year of study will focus on a variety of modules that reflect your interest in this area, such as mathematical biology, waves and fluid mechanics. With the methods of calculus and differential equations at the core, Applied Mathematics goes beyond further mechanics and allows us to describe and predict a rich variety of real-world behaviour. The first year of the programme will explore the core areas of mathematics, including calculus and algebra. Particular attention will be given to ensure you have a solid foundation in mathematical methods and techniques. We will coach you to think logically, construct rigorous proofs and think in abstract terms. You will also be introduced to useful mathematical structures. You will have the flexibility to choose an optional module in an area suited to your personal interests and career aspirations. Your understanding of the core areas of mathematics are developed in years two and three with streams of modules in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. To help develop the skills employers are looking for, you will also learn the programming language Python and understand how mathematics is used in a professional environment. In your final year you will gain advanced knowledge in non-linear differential equations and partial differential equations. You will also have the flexibility to tailor your studies to your interests by choosing from a variety of optional modules related to applied mathematics, such as mathematical biology, waves and fluid mechanics. You may also choose to work on a final year project where you can unleash your creativity and apply the techniques you have acquired to a particular topic or problem in mathematics or statistics. About Keele Keele University was established in 1949 by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. Founded to meet the needs of a changing world, Keele has always had a pioneering vision to be a different kind of university. We excel in both teaching and research, with some of the most satisfied students in England, and research that is changing lives for the better at a regional, national and global level. Our beautiful 600-acre campus is one of the biggest in Britain – but all the most important services and facilities are on your doorstep, with accommodation, teaching spaces, facilities including a medical centre, sports centre and pharmacy, and a range of shops, eateries and entertainment venues – including the Students’ Union – clustered around the centre.
