Course summary
Pursue your passion for Philosophy with the diverse MA Philosophy from one of the highest ranked Philosophy departments in the UK*. Do we have free will? Is morality relative? Is time travel possible? Is global equality achievable? Can we justify religious belief? Can computers have consciousness? Philosophy is the systematic study of fundamental questions concerning the world and our existence in it. Delve in to life’s big questions and explore the area of philosophy that interests you most through a wide range of specialist modules. These include: philosophy of mind and cognitive science; ethics, metaethics and global ethics; epistemology and metaphysics; philosophy of language; and philosophy of health and happiness. Students on our MA Philosophy will be taught by a vibrant community of philosophers, pursuing original research on a wide range of topics on which expert supervision is available. This programme can also be used as a route into PhD research.
Modules
You will study one core module and five optional modules before completting your 15,000 word dissertation. Core module:Research skills and methods Optional modules: epistemology; God, freedom and the meaning of life; metaphysics; philosophy of cognitive science; philosophy of health and happiness; philosophy of language; philosophy of mind; research seminar; global ethics I; global ethics II; human rights; global bioethics.
Assessment method
Students also complete a 15,000-word dissertation.
Entry requirements
The programme allows for multi-disciplinary entry. Applicants need a 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent, in philosophy or other relevant subjects (theology, politics, psychology, English, etc.) or a joint Honours degree of which philosophy or another relevant subject is a component. English requirements are: IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, TOEFL 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, 21 in Writing, or PTE Academic 59 in all 4 skills.
