Course summary

The Foundation Year of this four-year programme is designed to build your understanding of key subjects in social sciences, preparing you to meet the prerequisites for the associated degree programme. You will develop effective communication and study skills while covering fundamental topics. Modules include sociology, criminology, social policy, and social care, which will help you explore inequalities related to gender, class, race, disability, and health. You will use various theories to understand social change and how societies address discrimination and inequality. Please note that this course is not open to international students.

Modules

  • Foundation Year: Introduction to Sociology, Social Care Practice, University Life, Introduction to Counselling, Understanding Criminology, and Understanding Social Policy.
  • Year one: Contemporary Challenges in Crime and Society, Thinking Sociologically, Understanding Criminology, Criminal Justice and Human Rights, Culture, Power and Deviance, and Social Justice in Action.
  • Year two: Theoretical Criminology, Understanding the Social World, Research Problems and Methods: Qualitatively Better, and Research Problems and Methods: Making it Count.
  • Optional modules (semester two): Critical Perspectives on Policing, Critical Victimology, Environmental Justice, Internet Risk and Security, Policing and Social Control, and Violence in Society.
  • Year three: Dissertation, Work: Practice and Reflection.
In addition to choosing one core module, you will select four optional modules from the following list: Bodies: Biology to Blushing, Crime, Society and Racialisation, Critical Approaches to (Counter) Terrorism, Critical Perspectives on Policing, Critical Victimology, Digital Society, Environmental Justice, Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice, Human Rights, Genocide and Resistance, Identities and Interactions, Internet Risk and Security, Migration and Socio-Legal Dynamics, Prisons and Punishment, Probation and Rehabilitation, The Criminal Justice Process, and Violence in Society. ‎

Assessment method

You will be assessed during the foundation year through the following methods: group presentation and individual reflective essay, personal learning statement essay, written exam, essays, a 5-minute presentation, portfolio project, and reflective portfolio. please note the GCSE English and Math grade A-C Are required alongside any level 3 Qualifications. Functional Skills level 2 in numeracy and literacy are accepted as an alternative to the GCSE requirement
