Course summary

Our integrated foundation degrees are for those of you who possess the capability to pursue a degree but do not have the pre-requisite qualifications to directly apply to your desired course. The duration of the foundation element is one year, and, if you successfully pass, you will automatically progress on to the degree. A degree in Mechatronic Engineering allows you to combine mechanical skills, smart electronics, and robotics with control systems in order to address a range of complex engineering projects, all with a focus on sustainability – a theme critical to all engineering disciplines. Your career opportunities are vast and so is your earning potential allowing you to create the life you want in the future. As a professional mechatronic engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to drive this sustainability agenda forward by getting involved in the design of functional products, from large aircraft all the way to robotic manufacturing lines. This course sets out to ground you in the key principles and practices of several disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, electronic, control and computer systems. These academic disciplines are supplemented with the development of your skills in creative thinking and creating practical design solutions, two skills essential to the professional engineer. Gain hands-on real-world experience by taking part in an optional supervised work placement in your fourth year of the course. In your final year, you’ll work on a supervised individual research project. It’s possible to align this with one of the Master’s team projects, which involve the design, building and friendly competitive testing of either a road, airborne or rail vehicle – for example, Team HARE, Team Hawk or HudRail. Assessment method

A variety of assessment strategies will be used depending on the type and nature of the module. These include reports on laboratory experiments, laboratory-based assignments, and projects. English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in writing and no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent.
