Course summary

This integrated masters degree covers the theoretical principles of mechanical engineering alongside practical design work. The first two years are the same across our Mechanical Engineering degrees and focus on the essential principles of mechanical engineering, as well as law and management, systems design, and modelling and computing, in order to take a product from initial concept to the marketplace. Modules in your third year will allow you to extend your maths and materials knowledge to design solutions for sustainable manufacturing. You will also carry out an individual project, bringing together the concepts and skills you have learned. During your fourth year, you will take advanced modules and participate in a group design project, applying your engineering knowledge to solve a real-world problem. You will have access to extensive facilities, which include the largest wind tunnel in any UK university, a high-resolution 3D imaging centre, dedicated student design studios and workshops, and a materials and structures research facility in our new National Infrastructure Laboratory. Your Industrial Placement Year will enhance your employability, with an additional year-long paid placement in an engineering organisation. You will be able to apply the knowledge and skills that you developed during the early years of your degree, developing vital professional knowledge and skills to prepare you to become a professional engineer after graduation. Our courses are fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and offer a route to chartered status.

Modules

Typical modules include: Year one: Electrical and Electronic Systems; Mathematics for engineering; Mechanical Systems; Thermofluids. Year two: Engineering Management and Law; Fluid Mechanics; Systems Design and Computing. Year three: Individual Project; Engineering Design; Accounting and Finance; Finite Element Analysis; Manufacturing and Materials. Year four: Group design project; Composite engineering design; Manufacturing and supply chain management; Strategic Management. During your industrial placement year you will spend this extra time at an engineering firm, applying the skills and knowledge you've learned so far.

Assessment method

Testing is conducted through a combination of online and in-person examinations and assessed coursework in the form of problem-solving exercises, laboratory reports, design exercises, essays, and individual and group projects. Experimental, research and design skills are assessed through laboratory reports, coursework exercises and oral presentations. The Industrial Placement Year is assessed via an individual reflective report.
