Course summary

This course builds knowledge and skills in the planning and management of development projects and programmes. It is designed to deepen critical understanding of the strategies, processes, techniques and issues involved in taking ideas for development and turning them into practical realities with identifiable outcomes and benefits. The degree provides an excellent basis for career enhancement or conversion for those with interest and experience in projects for development. The focus of the course is on development projects in the public or third (voluntary or community) sectors, but the underlying principles are applicable to all types of project, including those for commercial benefit. On completion of your course, you will be able to understand and examine critically: The discipline of project and programme management, within an overall appreciation of the nature and purpose of projects The principles and practice of project planning, design, preparation, and appraisal techniques for projects in a development context The theory and practice of management skills for project and programme management, focusing particularly on 'hard' and 'soft' skills for successful project implementation Rankings Politics at Bradford is ranked 45th in the UK in The Complete University Guide University Subject Tables 2019 for its undergraduate courses. These rankings also place Bradford in the top 20 in the UK for graduate prospects. Modules

Core Modules: project planning and management 1; project finance and appraisal; project planning and management 2; dissertation in project planning and management. Option modules: issues in development theory; organisations and capacity enhancement; public sector management: concepts and practice; strategic management in the public sector; human resource management and development; project appraisal and economic analysis; issues in development policy; public policy analysis and management.

Assessment method

Dissertation.


Entry requirements

An undergraduate degree (2.2 Honours or above) UK system or comparative result if outside UK. We also give serious consideration to applicants with non-traditional backgrounds and take relevant social science work experience into consideration. Level of English Requires for non-native speakers: IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent (with sub-tests not lower then 5.5).
