Course summary
The MA Arts Practice will be of value to artists, arts or health managers, therapists, counsellors, community workers and teachers, plus others with an interest in the relationship between arts, health and wellbeing. A key element of this postgraduate art course is the cultivation of partnerships, internships and artist in residence schemes with NHS Trusts, arts organisations, social services, charitable trusts and commercial companies. Our students undertake projects in a broad range of media, alongside the study of concepts and theories that inform arts, health and wellbeing practice and research. The course will enable you to develop your professional skills and experience within relevant critical and contextual frameworks. It encompasses a broad spectrum of creativity from participation and socially engaged practice to site-specific art works aimed at enhancing healthcare environments.
Modules
Part One •Artist Practitioner 1 Critique Choice of one, 20 credit module from the three MA common modules, which you will study alongside Postgraduate students from other courses across the Faculty of Creative Industries: •Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship •Research and Practice in the Creative and Cultural Industries •Research Paradigms Part Two •Arts Practitioner 2 •Professional Practice in the Arts •Arts Practitioner 3 – Major Arts Project OR •Research Project – Learning Through Employment
Assessment method
Modules are largely assessed via practical outcomes, project proposals and research folios. Some modules make use of presentations and discussion of working methods and final outcomes. We will give you regular verbal feedback to help you develop your understanding during each module.
Entry requirements
A good undergraduate degree in a related discipline such as art or design or a significant body of practical work and/or written work in the field of the arts, that demonstrates competencies equivalent to a Bachelors degree. Applicants with appropriate qualifications in related fields such as teaching, art training, arts administration, occupational therapy, arts therapies, health sector management, arts and disability, social services, community work, youth work, or a period of professional employment in the field, will also be considered.
