Course summary
Explore issues in early childhood and gain practical experience of working with children and families. Taught at New City College, this course is normally delivered at their Hackney campus. Taught at New City College, this course develops your critical understanding of childhood, babies, children and families from multi-disciplinary perspectives. You’ll examine issues in local and international contexts and explore concepts such as play, development, ethics, social justice and leadership. We ensure that you have maximum flexibility on your course while still retaining a clear focus on the study of early childhood. Your modules are designed to provide you with essential knowledge and understanding for your future career, such as ensuring you are well-versed in children’s rights and protection and develop insights into effective teamwork. This foundation degree offers a blend of academic and vocational study within an early years work placement that will provide you with the skills to become an effective practitioner working with young children. On completion of the Foundation degree graduates are able to either embark upon their career immediately or continue their studies in a related Honours Top-up Degree. This course is designed to meet the professional and personal needs of all those working within the early years sector. Modules
On the Foundation Degree programme your study will be closely linked to your experience in the workplace. This is a classroom-based course incorporating a work placement. You will study a selection of modules over the two years: Level 4:
- Curriculum and Pedagogy: Linking Theory and Practice (40 credits).
- Introduction to Early Child Development (20 Credits).
- Reflective Practice in Action (20 Credits).
- Supporting Young Children’s Holistic Health and Wellbeing (40 credits).
- Contesting Childhood (20 Credits).
- Research in Early Childhood (40 Credits).
- Supporting Children with Additional Needs (20 credits).
Assessment method
You’ll be assessed through coursework. There are no exams. Assessments could include essays, group presentations, research-based reports and portfolio-based work. We’ll provide you with regular feedback on how well you're doing and give you regular guidance on how to improve your skills, knowledge and understanding.
