Course summary

Animal Science (top-up) offers those with existing qualifications in Animal Science, Animal Management or related subjects to develop their range of knowledge and skills and enhance their career prospects by graduating with an honours degree. Get hands-on with a scientific approach to animal management focusing on welfare and the practicalities and legislation of keeping and managing animals. Study the internal functioning of animals; practical ways of detecting and diagnosing disease; the interaction of animals with their environment; field-based conservation and aspects of behaviour such as migration patterns. Our partner college and local zoos and safari parks give you great opportunities for practical research. This course can lead to careers in animal care, conservation and scientific research into animal health and nutrition. Learn from academics and industry professionals who are current practitioners or leading researchers, gaining insight into today’s best practice and science. Study using formal lectures, practical laboratory and IT laboratory sessions and supported independent-study as well as getting practical experience with a diverse range of companion, farm, exotic and equestrian animals. Develop your range of skills through a mixture of applied science, practical management and business content, working hands-on with animals in both technical and management roles, making you highly employable in a number of careers. Gain understanding of a scientific approach to the management of animals. Explore legal and ethical aspects to the animal industry. The course enables a development of independence and enquiry, through the undertaking of a research project. You will develop practical skills in our well-equipped laboratories and you will have access to the extensive zoological education centre at Bedford College's Shuttleworth Campus, which includes farm, companion and zoo animals.
