Course summary

This exciting course will provide graduates with both theoretical and applied knowledge of current fields in bioscience, covering a wide range of topics to support and extend your knowledge. This course has a particular focus on the application of knowledge and the role of bioscience in modern society. Our course considers the interaction of biological systems on multiple levels – from molecular biology to whole organism biology within the context of global ecosystems. The development of specific skills such as biochemical analysis, cell culture, aseptic technique, genetic analysis and microscopy will be grounded in core bioscience skills such as critical analysis, data analysis and experimental design. In Years 2 and 3, you will have the option to specialise in one of the three key areas of modern bioscience – animal, plant or microbial systems, making the course bespoke to your interests. Lecturers at University Centre Shrewsbury have specialist knowledge and research experience in human, animal, plant and microbial organisms. You will also be taught by visiting lecturers from academia and industries – including the NHS – who are leaders in their respective fields. The Department has links with local industries, biotech companies, agricultural industries, plus several research groups based at University Centre Shrewsbury, allowing for networking opportunities for students.
