Course summary
Our joint honours course allows students to pursue their own areas of interest within English Literature and History of Art whilst also providing them with a solid foundation in both disciplines and a range of personal and professional skills which will serve as a springboard for their future career development. The programme is carefully designed to enable students to gradually develop their knowledge and skills and become autonomous, effective and independent learners. English Literature offers students the opportunity to study British and world literatures through a model of progressive specialisation that teaches advanced literary critical skills in the context of periodised, thematised, formal and theoretical modules. The History of Art course at Brookes emphasises the first-hand study of artworks and buildings, with most modules including visits to sites in Oxford or London.
Modules
In Year modules include Culture, Criticism and Literature, World Literature, Critical Theory, Shakespeare, Making and Meaning in Western Art, Making and Meaning in Western Architecture, Museums and Society, and Modern British Art from Impressionism to Brit Art. In Year 2 modules include American Literature and Culture, The Literature of Space, The Novel and Modernity, Culture, Crime and Transgression, Themes in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century European Art, and Oxford Buildings (an in-depth study of the remarkable architecture of Oxford). You will also attend a study trip to Paris. Final year specialist optional modules offer intensive, small-group teaching in a particular area of literary study. These are designed to build on the work you have done in Year 2. In addition, you will choose either the Contemporary Literature (Synoptic) module or the Dissertation Module, working one-to-one with a specialist lecturer.
