Course summary
The Foundation Programme for Health Professions is year zero of selected degree courses in the Allied Health Professions and Nursing and Midwifery departments at UWE Bristol. If you don’t have formal relevant qualifications or meet the normal entry requirements, but can demonstrate relevant life experience and commitment to this area, we will consider your application. Spend a year getting a solid grounding in science and healthcare-related topics on this springboard into higher education. Study areas of human biology, psychology, sociology and research, and get the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to take the next step in your education and career. Most of the teaching takes place at the City of Bristol College, although you’ll also be taught at our Glenside Campus. The teaching staff understand what’s required to succeed at the next level and the course is designed to get you academically and mentally ready. Personal, professional and educational experiences will be considered to determine motivation and ability to progress onto the degree course. All applicants are considered on an individual basis.

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)
The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 does not apply and all convictions, including those which are spent, must be disclosed. This is in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975. If you are offered a place, you must undergo a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check and will be required to complete a Disclosure Application form. All information will be treated in confidence and only taken into account when absolutely necessary.
Health checks
You must be in good health and up-to-date with all routine immunisations that are required for working in health and social care settings. If you are offered a place on this course, you will be required to complete a questionnaire and must be prepared to undergo a medical examination. You will also be required to confirm your status in respect of a number of infectious diseases (tuberculosis, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, varicella, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV antibodies) and be prepared to have all required vaccinations. Please note that the list of required vaccinations may change, in response to advice from the Department of Health. If your vaccinations are not up-to-date, this will affect your ability to continue on your course. If you have any concerns with regards to vaccinations please raise this at the point of application.
Interview
Suitability for the course will be determined through a short informal interview, which will involve staff from both City of Bristol College and the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. You will also be asked to complete a numeracy and literacy assessment.
