Course summary

Become a midwife with BSc Midwifery at the University of Southampton. On your three-year Midwifery degree you will gain the skills to make a lasting impact on the lives of women and their families through your in-depth understanding of the physical, mental and social aspects of healthy and complex pregnancy and childbirth. This midwifery course is split equally between campus study and clinical placements. Many placements will be in the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, but you will experience a wide variety of other settings, including community midwifery, clinics and GP practices. There’s also the option to gain experience abroad in your second year. Research is a core element of your degree, and you’ll be able to do two research-based assignments on midwifery topics of your choice.

Modules

We have a varied range of modules for all years. Examples of core modules for year one will include: An Introduction to Professional Practice (Level 4) Practice Experience 1 (P1) Practice Experience 2 (P2) Humanising Safe and Compassionate Care Health Sciences for Midwifery Practice Year Requirement Module 1. Assessment method

Assessments range from essays and exams to projects. These take place throughout the course to ensure that you are reaching the right levels of attainment. Your practical skills will be assessed whist you are on placement and recorded by your practice mentor.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C) and Science (minimum grade 4/C) if not offered at a level 3 qualification. Recent relevant study within the last 3 years You may be required to attend a selection day. Satisfactory Occupational Health and Police Checks will be required.
