Course summary

Our Business and Marketing degree prepares you to work in the rapidly evolving, and hugely diverse, world of marketing. The course focuses primarily on how businesses need to present themselves in increasingly competitive and disruptive customer environments. Alongside specialist marketing knowledge, you will build your understanding of managing people, operations, logistics and finance. You will learn how businesses need to operate effectively and responsibly in culturally diverse markets. This option includes a foundation year, which provides students with a sound introduction to key elements needed for studying business at degree level. This will give you a thorough and supportive academic preparation for study. The foundation year is carefully designed to build confidence in students’ abilities, develop essential academic and study skills, and provide the subject specific knowledge essential for success. You will have the opportunity to focus on your future employability by building your academic, leadership and management skills and practising them in problem-based team activities and scenarios. You will acquire an understanding of consumer behaviour, and develop expertise in digital marketing a key growth area in a knowledge-based economy. You will also gain a deeper understanding of the key areas of branding and marketing in a global context, learning to tailor the delivery of your messages to your chosen target market. Taught on our south-west London campus, on this degree you will have access to many opportunities for work experience through our Careers Team, and access to face-to-face and 24/7 online careers support, whether you choose to live on campus or commute to us. This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. If you choose this route, you will take the placement following year two of the main degree, and then return to complete your degree. A placement year is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable work experience, to build on the career skills we will teach you on this degree. The connections you make on the placement will improve your career prospects further, and equip you with the skills you need to secure graduate-level employment. Key features:

Modules

During the foundation year, you will take modules in English and Maths which will develop your core academic and study skills. The syllabus includes a year-long module relevant to your chosen degree subject, such as Business Essentials. This will provide you with a subject specific knowledge in Business which is essential for success in your degree. Throughout your degree there is a focus on supporting you to develop, track and recognise your own increasing ability to add value to organisations. This is achieved through our Business Readiness module where, working with your Personal Tutor, you will gather evidence of your knowledge, attributes and skills. This will demonstrate to prospective employers how you can play a key role in whichever organisations you work for. In your first year, you will learn to recognise your personal strengths and weaknesses through a process of self-assessment and reflection, and understand your role in a team. You will practice these skills in a variety of team problem-based activities and scenarios. You will also establish an overview of business organisations in a global context and be introduced to key areas of business such as finance, marketing and data analysis. Your second year will continue to develop your business readiness, and you will gain experience of management, from managing people across different cultures to supply chain and project management. You will develop key skills in marketing such as an understanding of consumer behaviour, and expertise in digital and services marketing. In your third year, you will be able to develop a deeper understanding of key areas such as branding and marketing in a global context, where you tailor the delivery of your message to local conditions. You will also study wider corporate strategy in applied contexts. You will be able to demonstrate your skills with an in-depth dissertation focusing on an area of marketing of your choice.
