Reasons to study Scenic Arts (Construction, Props and Painting) • Gain construction skills in wood and metal; using hand tools and machinery. Learn scenic painting techniques and explore prop making in a range of materials. • Gain advanced skills with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and 3D modelling using resins and silicon • Learn in our spacious workshop which includes CAD facilities, paint frame and specialist fibreglass and plaster room. • Hone your craft, through manufacturing scenic elements to a brief for staged productions in College and London venues, collaborating with other programmes as part of a creative team. • Develop your own areas of specialism through individual project work, productions and work placement preparing you for a career in the theatre and performance industries. • Share classes and projects with students from other programmes to learn about the performance, arts and events industries and how to use experimentation, enquiry and creative research in your work, and prepare to build a successful career. Career opportunities Our graduates have gone on to work as freelance scenic painters, prop makers, carpenters and engineers, and to work for scenery construction companies for theatre, film, television, entertainment, museums and themed attractions. Year 1 (Level 4): Introduction to scenic construction - the workshop environment, scenic construction techniques in wood and metal Introduction to scenic painting Introduction to three-dimensional modelling with materials including clay, plaster, latex, polystyrene, solvents and glues Introduction to stagecraft, technical drawing and CAD Theatre making practice - implement the set design for one or more realised productions Research and analysis of performance and the theatre industry Year 2 (Level 5): Materials, techniques and performance - learn about complex manufacturing techniques and staging technologies Specialise in either prop-making and scenic painting or construction and CAD Industry study – researching the industry through a work placement Production Practice - workshop assistant on two realised productions Research and context Year 3 (Level 6): Production practice: scenic manufacture - manufacture scenic elements to a brief, for a public production Production practice: scenic management - undertake the role of either a Scenic Workshop Manager or Scenic Project Manager Professional preparation Independent research project Graduate exhibition Please visit our website to view the course and module specifications in detail: https://www.bruford.ac.uk/learn/undergraduate-courses/scenic-arts/ Course content is regularly reviewed to keep it relevant and current. 1) Rose Bruford College Bursaries for UK Students: We will offer £600 financial support for each year of the course in the form of a bursary to all students who come from households below the median income level (£29,400). This information is provided to the student loan company who communicate it to our student services team so once confirmed you will be paid automatically in February (£300) and May (£300) if you are eligible. Please note the figures listed here are for academic year 2022/23 and are subject to change. 2) International Student Bursaries for Design, Management & Technical Arts courses: Rose Bruford College usually awards one bursary to an international student as they commence their study on an undergraduate course within Design, Management and Technical Arts. The bursaries, with a value of £2,000 each year for three years (total £6,000) are part of the College’s commitment to making high-quality professional training and education in theatre and the entertainment industries available to students from anywhere in the world.
