Course summary

Our BA (Honours) Film and Digital Broadcast Production degree brings together a wide range of skills and technical understanding from areas that are increasingly converging. You will build up production skills covering the creation of ideas from written concepts, scripts and audience research through to filming and editing for film, television, audio and online. The aim is that graduates will be best placed to secure employment either as freelance or for an organisation. Delivered at our newly-developed Digital Media Centre at the City Hub campus, you will have access to our new broadcasting studio and podcasting/audio studio as well as the industry-standard Adobe Creative Suite. You will also have numerous opportunities to engage with other students aiming to get into the creative industries and will work in response to industry briefs. Currently subject to validation. About the course Year 1 (Level 4) provides clear foundations on which to build your skills in both practical film/broadcast productions and the concepts behind them. You will undertake practical units in camera, editing and broadcast studio technology whilst studying ideas and concepts in analysing visual imagery, interpreting narratives and understanding audiences. Indicative Year 1 Modules (120 credits): -visual imagery -audience and narrative -single camera production -television practical skills Year 2 (Level 5) gives the chance to continue building and developing your practical skills and how to work with clients. Indicative Year 2 modules (120 credits): -TV newscast -working with a client -audio production And choose one from: -documentary video production or -fictional video production Year 3 (Level 6) Year three provides the opportunity to show academic understanding with a dissertation whilst also analysing what skill sets they need to improve to meet practical and production based understanding needed in the industry through the completion of a module in advanced video skills. Finally, students will undertake an independently planned and managed production project to demonstrate their skills to potential employers. Indicative Year 3 modules (120 credits): -film/TV dissertation -advanced video skills -video production and enterprise Assessment A combination of traditional and innovative assessment methods are used: including case studies, group projects, live briefs, peer review, time-constrained assessments and presentations. There are no examinations. Bursaries We want our courses to be accessible to students from any background, so we’ve put together a cash support package in the form of non-repayable bursaries to provide financial help where it’s really needed. Careers and progression Graduates will be well-placed to progress to postgraduate education, training or employment in the global creative industries - such as: camera operator, sound/lighting technician, editor, producer, director of photography, videographer, games developer, film-maker or into the teaching profession.
