Course summary
The UK computer games sector is currently estimated to be worth over £7.1BN (2022) and is one of the fastest growing media markets globally. With the accessibility of gaming via mobile devices increasing its popularity, around half the UK population plays regularly. Our two-year, BTEC (Pearson) HND Games Development course provides a broad selection of studies enabling learners to gain and develop hands-on practical digital skills combined with written assignments relating to the historic and contextual study of the video games industry. The HND in Games Development will take you through various stages of game development from initial idea generation, proposal, game design, project management to prototype production. Successful completion of the course provides the learner with an industry-wide recognised and respected level 4 & 5 vocational qualification. The course is designed to develop and enhance transferable skills as well as specialised skills in game design and technical production in readiness for your career choice or further study within the games industry. By the end of the course, you will know how to: Develop Ideas for games Manage Media Projects Undertake Market Research Pitch and Present Use theoretical principles to design gameplay experiences and narratives Use 3D modelling software and game engines Use the adobe creative suite Undertake Marketing and Promotional Activities Progression After completing this course, you will have the chance to top-up to the BA (Hons) Creative Practice course, studied at the Hinckley Campus and awarded by Coventry University to complete your full degree.
Modules
YEAR 1: Core Subjects: Discover your personal strengths within the game development sector by undertaking an individual creative media project. Develop a broad contextual understanding of the video game industry and the career opportunities they provide. Gain transferable professional practice skills and plan your gaming career pathway. Develop game concepts and build prototype game ideas using industry-standard software (Unreal Engine). Explore the development of the video games industry and its social, cultural, technological and economic components. Gain an understanding of the principles and practices of design, technology and interaction that inform compelling video game design. Complementary Subjects: Enhance and evaluate your game design (gameplay/assets/scenes) by planning and presenting game ideas via the creation of storyboards. Bring your character designs to life by developing an understanding of animation principles and 2D animation techniques. YEAR 2: Core Subjects: Gain an understanding of the various roles undertaken within a video game production company and experience working as part of a team. Develop the skills necessary to work effectively as an individual game developer. Prepare for employment or further specialist education by practising and developing interview and CV writing skills. Complementary Subjects Undertake a client brief in relation to the role of motion graphics within a video game media product. Develop your own brand identity and gain an understanding of the importance of branding via a social, cultural and historical framework. Plan, develop and implement a marketing strategy to promote yourself/your independent gaming company.
Assessment method
You will be assessed through a variety of different formats, including practical skills-based tasks and written assignments which when combined will for portfolio a portfolio of work and research for a final media product.
