Course summary

The UK sport industry is worth £24 billion and supports nearly a million jobs and there are plenty of exciting career routes and opportunities. Students on our HND in Sport are being developed for roles in sports coaching and sports development where they will go on to work for private organisations, or in local government. The health and fitness industry offers opportunities to help improve people’s lives, or to join the lucrative leisure industry. Sports science opens doors to careers based on physiology, bio mechanics and nutrition. With our HND in Sport, you will learn about the sport and leisure industry, with a focus on sports coaching, lifestyle and well-being, nutrition, training and fitness and physical education. Students will have full use of the Sports Hall and Gym facilities which holds a wide range of equipment. Students can also visit/use Aylestone Park Football Club and Leicester University Sports Hall. Progression Opportunities This course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for successful employment in the health and fitness, leisure and sports sectors or for progression to an undergraduate 1 year top-up degree. On successful completion of the course students will: Have the sporting skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global sports environment. Have the knowledge and training for a range of careers in Sport, including Fitness Manager, Personal Trainer, Sports Development Officer and Activity Leader. Understand the diversity of roles within Sport. Understanding of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values. Provide opportunities for students to enter employment or progress on to further education. Understand the local, regional and global context of Sport and, for those students with a global outlook, to aspire to international career pathways. Address contemporary issues facing the industry, and society at large, with particular emphasis on sustainability and the environment.

Assessment method

You will be assessed on individual project assignments by the delivering lecturer. You will receive a range of creative assignments per year ranging from practical based work through to essays/ seminars and reports for the industry and practitioners. The length of projects will vary depending on the nature of the assignment. Assessments and feedback will be completed within two weeks of the project deadline

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
