Course summary

Hillsborough campus is set to be one of the leading photographic centres in the UK in the brand new, purpose built facilities, with good industry contacts both local and national and the associated benefits. We teach creative and practical photographic skills that are relevant for the individual and a rapidly changing industry. The Foundation Degree in Photography is validated by Sheffield Hallam University. Students will be encouraged to practice in an aspect of photography which is appropriate to their abilities and to develop a style which is identifiable as their own. Students will be given the opportunity to develop their skills in image making, using the wide variety of equipment available to photographers and will gain experience in the use of digital camera formats. The future of commercial photography undoubtedly lies in the digital environment which is now the norm in commercial and non commercial practice. For this reason we have opted to focus the course exclusively on digital image generation. The department has had a large investment in state of the art digital photographic technologies which makes this one of the best equipped courses in the country. The Foundation Degree in Photography aims to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding of versatility and adaptability for participation in employment in the photographic sector and related creative industries. Alternatively, it will provide a progression route to advance towards other qualifications such as an honours degree. We aim to provide students with the knowledge and confidence to function as a professional photographer on completing the second year of the course.  However, we are also able to offer a full-time route of progression to level 6 here at the College on our BA Hons (Top Up) Creative Practice: Photography course or the opportunity to apply to top up to Level 6 at Sheffield Hallam University. Our students are also sought after by a number of colleges, country-wide, based on their high level of skills and professionalism, these courses should be applied for via UCAS. Applicants who are studying for SHU-validated foundation degrees are free to apply to Sheffield Hallam University provided that they submit an application via UCAS by the deadline. Applicants who wish to progress to part-time study on their designated honours degree progression route will apply directly to the University.   The offer made by the University will be subject to: a successful interview successful completion of the foundation degree programme submission of a satisfactory personal statement and reference meeting the University’s literacy and numeracy requirements satisfying any additional specific course requirements for entry to the designated progression route (e.g. successful completion of associated bridging studies, portfolio, interview, or any non-academic conditions) Offers are made subject to the availability of courses and the University Terms and Conditions.
