Course summary
Endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), and Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), this course provides the scientific theory and practical skills required to work as a sport and exercise scientist or health and exercise practitioner. Foundation Year in Health and Exercise Science Develop your academics skills and confidence and gain a grounding of the fundamentals of Health and Exercise Science with an initial foundation year, with guaranteed progression onto our full BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science course. You will study a set of modules from with the Institute of Sport, Nursing and Allied Health that are designed to introduce you to studying at university level, as well as give you a better understanding of health and exercise science. The Foundation Year also presents flexible progression opportunities onto other courses with the Institute of Sport, Nursing and Allied Health. Upon completion of our Foundation Year in Health and Exercise Science, you are guaranteed progression onto the BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science course (see below). You will also have the opportunity to also apply for the following courses after a successful interview (for professional programmes) and occupational health and DBS clearances, where appropriate: BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy Choose your pathway Within our sport and exercise science degree, you will learn how to support individuals and teams towards achieving their optimal performance whether that is in a sport, occupational or health setting. CIMSPA professional standards (Gym Instruction, Personal Training, Health Navigator and Long-Term Conditions) are embedded throughout year 2 and year 3 within a range of optional modules. This degree gives you the chance to work with experts in state-of-the-art facilities to develop your specialism of choice, as you choose between a degree that focuses on Sport Performance or Physical Activity for Health. Our course structure means that you will explore the foundations of sport and exercise science before tailoring and personalising your degree to either a Sport Performance (SP) or Physical Activity for Health (PAH) route. BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (Sport Performance) The success of any high-performance athlete is dependent on having a skilled and knowledgeable team of sports scientists behind them. Our BASES-endorsed sport performance pathway provides you with the skills and knowledge required to assess critically the physiological, biomechanical and psychological characteristics of the athlete and to apply these skills to performance enhancement. With a practical-based modular approach, you will learn from expert professionals and internationally renowned researchers BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (Physical Activity for Health) This pathway is for you if you want to help make people healthier through lifestyle change. Only 63% of adults and 47% of children meet the government’s physical activity recommendations (Active Lives Survey), with lower activity levels contributing to an increase in chronic disease. This BASES-endorsed option is specifically designed to develop scientific knowledge and practical competencies in biomechanics, physiology and psychology, with application to health, exercise, and wellbeing. In addition, you will gain CIMSPA professional competencies in Gym-Instruction, Personal Training, Health Navigator and Long-Term Conditions. Both pathways are recognised education partners of CIMPSA
