Course summary

The PhD in Education gives you the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge in an area of interest and to hone advanced research skills. You’ll work with faculty who are global in their outlook and experts in their fields. Our doctoral researchers come from all over the world. For many, the PhD is an important step in advancing a professional career. Areas of study We host four research centres. Doctoral researchers become members of one or more of these depending on their area of interest, with supervisors generally coming from the research centre:

  • Centre for Higher Education and Equity Research
  • Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth (jointly hosted by the Department of Education and the Department of Social Work and Social Care)
  • Centre for Teaching and Learning Research
  • Centre for International Education.

Entry requirements

You’re normally expected to have a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree. You must show evidence of at least three years work experience in education or a related area. Your Masters-level qualification must be in a related subject area or you must show evidence of your research experience gained in the UK or overseas education system. In exceptional circumstances, you may also be considered for this course if you don’t have the academic qualifications required but can show evidence of relevant professional experience.
