Course summary

Broaden your understanding of materials science and engineering (MSE) in this professionally accredited degree. Our daily routines are built around the manufactured items we use, from cars and computers to more advanced technologies such as satellite communications. This course examines how the invention and improvement of materials is helping solve real societal problems. You'll engage with scientific and engineering aspects of the discipline to analyse how innovations are opening up new opportunities in fields including healthcare and transport. You'll also explore how materials science is transforming technology in emerging areas such as biomedical engineering, 3D printing and robotics. Through experimental work and individual and group projects, you'll learn how to manipulate existing materials and develop new and improved ones. You'll become familiar with the cutting-edge tools used for advanced materials imaging and characterisation as you investigate the structure and properties of matter. In your final year, you'll begin to specialise across a series of modules as you tailor the course towards your career interests. The common structure of the first two years of our Materials degrees means that transfer between courses is usually possible during this time. If you are an international student, transferring to a different course could have an impact on your visa, but our International Student Support Team are here to help advise and support you. Professional accreditation This degree is professionally accredited by the IOM3 (The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining) on behalf of the Engineering Council. As well as your main Imperial degree, you will also receive the award of the Associateship of the Royal School of Mines on completion of this course.

Additional entry requirements

Interview

If your UCAS application indicates that you are likely to satisfy our requirements, you will be invited to an applicant day. Applicant days are typically held on Wednesdays between November and March and run from 10.30 to 15.30. You will be expected to attend the whole day. During an applicant day, you will hear from our Director of Undergraduate Studies and then our Admission Tutor. Activities include: A 30 minute one-to-one interview with one of our lecturers. We aim for the interview to be more of a conversation. The main purpose of the interview is for us to see whether you are suitable for the course, as much as for you to decide if Imperial is the place for you. A 45 minute group task. The task will be an engineering-based problem-solving challenge to see your team working skills, as we deem this to be an important part of life at Imperial. A 60 minute Q&A with current student ambassadors where you will be able to ask them questions about the course and studying in London. We hope our applicant days will be held in-person at our South Kensington campus, however this will be subject to restrictions at the time. We will notify applicants who are invited about the arrangements. For those unable to travel, the applicant days will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams.
