Course summary

Study topics from modern cryptography (the art of writing or solving codes) to modelling black holes, and complex financial problems. You'll learn abstract and structured thinking skills while studying mathematics, statistics and operational research. This course is very broad, allowing you to explore topics like abstract algebra, black holes and relativity, networks, and machine learning. As part of this course you’ll:

  • Develop your abilities in problem-solving, calculation and logical argument
  • Be able to specialise in pure or applied mathematics or statistics, or follow a broad path across these topics and more
  • Use our student centre, a dedicated learning and social space, exclusively for maths students
  • Use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package 'R'
You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops, by leading researchers in fields, such as group theory, the mathematics of nature and experimental design. Southampton graduates from this programme are highly sought after by employers in finance, commerce, industry, education, and research, and you could move into a career working on scientific and social challenges. Modules

Year one will give you a foundation in key areas such as calculus, linear algebra and mathematical modelling. In years two and three you can choose from a range of optional mathematics modules such as Fields and Fluids; Actuarial Mathematics; Complex Analysis. You can personalise your learning further in year three by taking modules from other subject areas or interdisciplinary modules. Assessment method

You will be assessed in a variety of ways such as coursework, tests and exams, enabling you to demonstrate your strengths and show what you have learnt.

Qualification requirements

We welcome students with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate which need to be equivalent to A level standard. As A level Mathematics is required for this programme, all equivalent qualifications also need an equivalent of A level Mathematics, grade A.
