Media and communication are at the heart of our culture, society and democracy. We get our news from TV and Twitter in moments of crisis, rely on the cinema and streaming for entertainment, and connect using social media. You’ll learn a blend of analytical, creative and technical skills, so you can become an expert in understanding and using the media. We’ve created this degree to reflect the many different media careers you can follow. Year 1 Core modules: Analysing Content Media Users, Audiences and Fans Digital Communication Technology Digital Video and Audio Production Media Writing and Narrative Option modules: Choose up to two from a list which may include: Online Tools: Programming and Web Design Platforms, Internet Industries and Law Sports Media Industries and Law News Industries and Law Writing for Journalism Introduction to Screenwriting Media Film and Television Industries and Law Year 2 Core modules: From Studio to Social Media Careers & Entrepreneurship Researching Digital Communication, Media and Culture Option modules: Choose one from a list which may include: Film and Television Fandom and Participatory Media Sports Fandom and Participatory Media Music Fandom and Participatory Media Digital Activism Fandom and Participatory Media Then choose up to three from a list which may include: Sports Broadcasting and Commentary Global Popular Cinema: Hollywood and Beyond Magazine Design and Production Television News Podcasting Making Radio Live Television Production On-Screen Training: Becoming a Presenter Influencers, Promotion and PR Year 3 - optional placement year Final Year Core modules: Research Dissertation Media Industry Project Students who have successfully completed the Work Placement Year replace the Media Industry Project with one additional option module. Assessment method

We use a variety of assessments, including video shorts, podcasts, newsroom days, audience research portfolios, essays, production pitches, data analytics, presentations, and dissertation. This allows you the ability to tailor your degree to fit your passions, interests and strengths. You will be taught by world-leading scholars whose research is helping to shape our understanding of how media, journalism and culture operate alongside industry-leading practitioners and producers, supplemented by a variety of guest talks.

Qualification requirements

Applicants with prior learning or prior experiential learning will be considered individually by the School of Arts and Humanities Accreditation and Validation Panel, to assess whether it is appropriate to grant general or specific credit towards the course. Applications from international students will be considered on an individual basis, and with advice from the University's International Office. If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.
