Course summary

The BA Practical Filmmaking course prepares the next generation of screen creatives. It builds creative and technical skills essential to succeed in today’s film, television, and new media industries. Our professional tutors and high-calibre guest speakers teach the fundamentals of storytelling, production and screen business skills. Gain experience across filmmaking and screen content disciplines, such as screenwriting, producing, directing, camera and lighting, and editing.

  • Comprehensive: MetFilm School course leadership and tutors are comprised of industry practitioners and educators with award-winning experience across the industry. Members of the teaching team also hold individual membership in a variety of leading external organisations such as WGGB (Writers Guild of Great Britain), BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), and BSC (British Society of Cinematographers).
  • Industry-facing: Secure employment in the creative screen industries with first-hand practical guidance from working industry professionals.
  • Real-life Experience: Build a range of work and put your knowledge into practice during the course by working with external companies and creating projects for industry clients.
  • Portfolio: Develop a range of work that includes fiction, documentary, episodic, and commercial productions for film, television, and the web.

Over the course of the two years, you will complete modules across Levels 4, 5, and 6. Level 4 Modules:

  • Story to Script: 20 Credits, Core

Level 5 Modules:
  • Documentary Development and Production: 40 Credits, Core

  • Choice of Specialism Cinema Elective (including Directing, Cinematography, Producing, Screenwriting, and Post Production): 20 Credits, Core
Level 6 Modules:

  • Graduation Project Development: 20 Credits, Core

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

The following tests are satisfactory to demonstrate this: IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge PET, ESOL Skills for Life Level 1 and 2, Trinity Level 1. IELTS – BA (Hons) Practical Filmmaking: Students need to achieve an IELTS overall score of at least 6.5 with at least 5.5 in writing, listening, reading and speaking.
