OVERVIEW Nursing is much more than a job. It is a challenging and extremely rewarding vocation that makes a real difference to people’s lives, and registered nurses with the right skills, knowledge and experience for modern-day practice are in high demand. Our exciting and innovative Nursing (Adult) degree course will enable you to deliver and lead on safe, effective and compassionate care for adults with a range of health conditions. Our adult nursing degree course provides the perfect environment and opportunity for you to get hands-on training and experience. We have outstanding facilities including a replica hospital ward on campus where you can practise and hone your skills, while our network of healthcare contacts will enable you to take on invaluable industry placements in a variety of settings, from NHS trusts to community care. You will learn from our expert clinical practitioners and develop a strong understanding of human development, key body systems, pharmacology and safe management of medicine, as well as the personal and technical skills needed to deliver compassionate, high-quality care across many different settings. This course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), enabling you to apply for Registered Nurse status when you complete your degree. WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

FACILITIES As a student on our adult nursing course, you will have access to University College Birmingham's Health Skills and Simulation Suite. This purpose-built facility includes a six-bed replica hospital ward complete with simulation manikins and integrated filming and audio equipment. The suite also includes a community care environment, allowing you to practise working in the variety of settings you may encounter in your future career, while we have a clinical skills teaching room with virtual reality technology to support your training, along with additional study and teaching areas for our nursing students. PLACEMENTS Our course features multiple placements in different environments throughout your studies, ranging in duration from four weeks to 14 weeks. Participating in care delivered over 24 hours a day and 7 days per week is an integral part of the course, so you will be expected to adopt various shift patterns. Some placements may also be some distance from your home to enable you to experience different settings. Assessment method

Please be aware that methods of delivery for this course may be altered due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic – for the most up-to-date information, please refer to our website: www.ucb.ac.uk ASSESSMENT You will be assessed 50% in practice and simulation (minimum 2,300 hours) through completion of a Practice Assessment Document and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). The 50% theory (minimum 2,300 hours) is assessed through a variety of modes including written assignments, presentations, examinations, professional discussions and a portfolio of evidence. The course consists of three parts. You will be expected to demonstrate achievement of set competencies and outcomes at the end of each part to enable progression to the next part or to complete the course. Our teaching and assessment is underpinned by our Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy 2021-2024.

Students must also complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. UCB will coordinate and fund the completion of the check.

Interview

The Admissions unit will use the entrance criteria, as well as your personal statement, reference and work experience information, to shortlist candidates for interview. All interviews will take place after 15 January UCAS equal consideration deadline. Successful applicants will be invited to an interview which will comprise of: - Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) – You will be assessed on your motivation and understanding of the role of a nurse and your familiarity with NHS Constitution and Values.

Additional fee information

UK: If you are a UK student enrolling on a Foundation Degree or a BA/BSc at University College Birmingham in 2021/22, your fee for this academic year will be £9,250. A half year tuition fee is £4625. This is a yearly fee, and will increase with inflation in subsequent years (in line with the government’s permitted rise). If you are an English student studying your first higher education qualification, you can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. You will not start repaying this loan until you leave the course and are earning over £25,000 a year. If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, you should apply to Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland, or SAAS. The loans and grants available to you will differ from those available from Student Finance England. UCB does not charge for 24 or 48 week placements.
