Course summary
The HND in General Engineering course is designed to develop your knowledge and skills across a broad range of electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering technologies that are essential to businesses in this rapidly evolving and dynamic sector of the economy. The course also aims to help you gain key transferable skills that are highly valued by employers. The broad curriculum will provide students with a firm grounding in engineering principles and techniques. Students will have the opportunity to develop and enhance crucial skills such as communication, teamwork, organising and planning, numeracy, problem solving, flexibility and adaptability, action planning, self-awareness, initiative, personal impact and confidence, environmental sustainability, and social, public and ethical responsibility. This two year Pearson BTEC course is designed for students wishing to progress or reinforce their studies prior to the final year of an honours degree or a career in engineering. Assessment method
There will be a wide range of assessment methods and equipment appropriate to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria, and all assessments consider the practices used within the engineering sector. Whilst credit is awarded at a threshold level of achievement only, grading arrangements will apply to individual units which will allow for the award of merit and distinction achievement according to Pearson's published grading criteria. Assessment is considered an important part of the learning process. In formulating the methods of assessment for this award and care has been taken to ensure that all assessments test the skills and knowledge needed in the Engineering working environment. Assessment methods will include reports, problem-based assignments and presentations. There may be classroom tests led by the tutor but there are no formal examinations.

All applicants will be assessed on individual experience and should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in a relevant sector of engineering and be able to study at higher education level. The college would consider applications from mature students with relevant work experience who may not have related formal academic qualifications.
