Course summary

The Mechanical Engineering HNC (RQF) course, awarded by Pearson, provides students with a firm grounding in the fundamental engineering principles that are key to all engineering roles, whilst providing the opportunity to begin to specialise in a field of interest. The course is perfect for students looking to progress from full-time level 3 study and also for those students who are already employed and are looking to extend their knowledge to progress their career. This stimulating and challenging programme of study has been designed in conjunction with industry leaders and provides the core elements for successful career progression in the mechanical engineering industry. Havering Colleges, New City College is registered with the Office for Students. Successful completion of this course satisfies the academic requirements for the Engineering Council’s Engineering Technician standard. Upon completion of the course, students are able to refer to themselves as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) and apply for Engineering Council membership. This is a classroom based course. This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in engineering, or obtain the necessary skills needed to progress your current engineering career and operate as an Engineering Technician. The course also provides the foundation for further qualifications including a higher national diploma (HND) in engineering, foundation degree or as the first qualifying year for a B.Eng (Hons) degree course. The course has been designed to meet the requirements of the engineering industry and is underpinned by the research knowledge and industry experience of our staff. At the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate the core knowledge and skills needed for an engineering role, as well as some of the more specialised skills needed within the electronics and electrical engineering fields. Students will have an appreciation of contemporary theory and also understand their responsibilities in regards to cost, sustainability and the rapid change that takes place within world-class engineering. The course is studied over a period of two years. Attendance is 1 day per week. The course will take place at our Rainham Campus. Please note: teaching may begin at our Quarles Campus due to the development of the Rainham Campus. You will receive feedback on all practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework within three weeks of your submission. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor. You will learn through combination of: Lectures will provide you with most of the fundamental subject knowledge that you will require and will be taught in large groups. Meetings with your personal tutor will give you the opportunity to discuss topics in detail, raise any areas of difficulty and discuss your progression through the course. Workshop and simulation sessions give you hands-on experience of engineering techniques and software, and as a part of your course will have access to the latest engineering simulation packages, including CAD Multisim. Per week, the part-time course workload will include: 7 hours of lectures 2.5 hours of workshops and simulation sessions 0.5 hours per fortnight of one-to-one meetings All of our teaching staff are experienced in the field. All students are allocated a personal tutor who will be your first point of communication should you have any queries or concerns. Regular 1:1 sessions will take place within the classroom where there will be the opportunity to discuss your course and progress.

Modules

Example of course modules delivered over two years: Core engineering: Engineering Design Engineering Maths Engineering Science Managing a Professional Engineering Project (set by Pearson) Mechanical focussed: Mechanical Principles Fundamentals of thermodynamic Material, properties and testing Fluid mechanics The course operates on a modular basis with each module carrying 15 academic credits. Part-time students take modules worth 30 credits per semester. The full HNC qualification is equivalent to 120 credits.

Assessment method

This course provides you with the opportunity to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally contains at least one piece of practice, or formative, assessment for which you will receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them will not count towards your module mark. There will be formal, or summative, assessment during, or at the end of, each module. Formal assessment will be solely through a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, presentations and projects. The grades from your formal assessments will count towards your module mark.
