On this course, you’ll immerse yourself in the depth and breadth of everything English has to offer – from both classic and contemporary masterpieces of English literature, to the evolution of English itself from its Anglo-Saxon roots to its current status as a global language. Are you inspired by the power of stories? Our literature offerings cover everything from Shakespeare to the latest science fiction. Would you like to explore aspects of language and communication? You can choose from fascinating topics such as the language of humour, language and politeness, or sociolinguistics. Or would you like to create your own novel, screenplay, or video game script? You can experiment with creative writing in modules such as Writing Beyond the Page. Why study English at Huddersfield?

  • From the second year on, numerous optional modules allow you to design your own customized pathway to match your own changing interests as you progress through the course.
  • Whether you decide to specialize or stay versatile, this course grants you maximum freedom to explore the whole spectrum of English studies.
  • We get you out of the classroom on a range of exciting fieldtrips including The Bronte Parsonage, The British Library and Shakespeare's Globe in London.
  • Every year students also have the chance to get involved in events at the Huddersfield Literature Festival (https://www.huddlitfest.org.uk/).
Additional Costs: Placements - The nature and suitability of your work placement is decided in consultation with your tutors. You are responsible for making your own arrangements for any travel or incurred costs in relation to the placement module, or in relation to the optional placement year if you chose to undertake one as part of your degree.

Assessment method

The assessment of this course will be based on both written and practical work including examinations, essays, presentations, posters, research projects and screencasts. Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

If you do not meet standard entry requirements, you may be asked to provide evidence or a writing sample to illustrate your readiness for the course. Mature students will be considered on an individual basis. If you are from outside the UK, you may be admitted with a Higher National Diploma or equivalent in a relevant discipline. For 3 + 1 entry to the course, a relevant UK Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree with a merit profile value of 240 credits or equivalent. You should consult UCAS website for current requirements. Applications will also be considered based on the equivalent of 240 credits or 120 ECTs appropriately matched to levels 4 and 5 of the course. English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.
