Course summary

Learn how to develop treatments for some of the world’s most challenging diseases of our time. You will develop key aspects of the drug discovery journey, from initial concept through to clinical treatment. Spend your second year training with our pharmaceutical industrial partners such as Sygnature Discovery Ltd based in Nottingham or national partner GlaxoSmithKline. This provides a unique opportunity to gain work-place experiences such as transferable leadership skills. Your research portfolio forms part of your compulsory second year training. It's designed around the Registered Scientist (RSci) qualification. This gives you the opportunity to independently submit your portfolio towards the application. You will establish practical and professional skills from both the School of Pharmacy and the School of Life Sciences. You'll learn:

  • to communicate complex ideas through a variety of formats, such as a simulated pitch to drug discovery investors for funding
  • core practical skills in key areas that underpin drug discovery, such as synthesis of drugs, and in vitro and in vivo analysis
You will benefit from a range of teaching approaches and methods from experts collaborating with, or working in, the pharmaceutical industry. Dedicated support A dedicated supervisor will support you during your research project. You will work alongside our researchers who are transforming lives and improving societies. Our small group learning environment can help you settle in quickly and form a lasting network of connections.

Modules

You will largely work and study in lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and laboratories. Your research project will be spent in industry. You will gain valuable experience and be supported by working experts in their field. This will also develop your professional skills such as problem-solving and data analysis. This project will help improve your employability, look great on your CV and help you build contacts. Taught modules will teach you about the historic and modern-day drug discovery. Our modules will also bring together sciences such as biology and chemistry to give you an interdisciplinary knowledge of drug discovery and pharmaceutical sciences.


Entry requirements

All applicants must either have obtained, or be on track for a minimum 2:1 (upper second class) degree (or equivalent) with significant chemistry content. Applicants need to supply a full transcript of completed modules. Example first degrees include (but are not restricted to) chemistry, biochemistry, natural sciences, pharmacology, life sciences, pharmacy. All applicants meeting the minimum entry requirements and submitting a credible personal statement would be considered for interview. Offers of a place can only be made after a successful interview. Offers will only be made where a placement is available, and will need to be accepted within a limited timeframe. All applicants meeting the entry requirements but who are unsuccessful in their application or interview will automatically be offered a place on the one-year MSc in Drug Discovery and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
