Course summary

The BA (Hons) Counselling (Top up) programme is designed to provide an academic pathway for individuals aspiring to work within the field of the counselling professions, within private, voluntary, independent and statutory sectors. The programme has been developed in response to continuing demand for counselling skills, training and mental health services in the region. The award reflects contemporary applications of humanistic counselling modalities and other approaches, applicable to a range of client needs and professional settings. It equips the practitioner with the knowledge and skills recommended for best practice within a range of primary care. The educational focus of the programme involves students building on existing knowledge and skills to enable their professional and academic development, and supports the concept of lifelong learning and continuing professional development.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

Academic requirements: Entry at Level 6 Successfully completed a Foundation Degree/ HND in Counselling or related sector. Or Successfully completed a Pearson Level 5 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or equivalent Completed 100-hour placement within counselling setting Good level of spoken or written English Successful applicants will need a satisfactory current enhanced DBS All candidates will be invited in for a formal interview and will need to complete an assessment task – skills demonstration and reflective writing activity Recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be accepted in line with the University policy and procedures. This will mean that RPL paperwork will need to be completed and approved by an RPL panel. Non Traditional entry All candidates who do not meet the standard entry requirement will be invited in for an interview and will be required to complete a written essay and carry out an individual presentation, to assess their suitability for the programme.
