Games Development at Ravensbourne University London - UCAS

Course summary

From designing characters and environments to pitching ideas to industry, leave with an enviable portfolio of work and thrive in the world of games development. Find your niche in this multidisciplinary course by focusing on one of three key gaming areas: games art, technical design or design and production. Game making is central to this course, pushing students to develop their own practice in a supportive and critical environment. Students work with a broad range of briefs across table top, TTRPG, mobile, console and PC and engage with the wider elements of games culture and practice. The course reflects forward thinking industry practice in its approach to technical design as a growing discipline within games development, alongside more established avenues such as games/technical art and games design. Working both independently and as a part of a team, students learn industry level skill-sets in game engine technologies, games culture and game design fundamentals. This multidisciplinary course enables a firm grounding in the games development process and core disciplinary technologies. Before entering into their second year students choose to specialise in one of the following three pathways:

  • Game Design and Production - for budding producers, game designers and narrative designers.
  • Game Art - for those looking for a way into 2D and 3D environment design, character design and visualisation
  • Technical Design - for student designers who want to push their technical skills into level design, scripting, prototyping and engine technologies.
With access to cutting-edge technology, world class facilities and deep industry contacts, students can take their first steps into this exciting field.

Modules

Year 1: Students are introduced to the fundamentals of games programming, architecture and the relevant media skills essential for games development. Throughout the year, students learn the practices and conventions of industry protocols alongside personal development attributes required for success while at university and in the world of work. Year 2: Progressing from the essential foundations of games development, the focus in Year 2 moves towards the specific technical skills necessary for game development across the range of creative possibilities. Here, students will begin growing into their desired specialism – facilitated by a range of elective pathways that will see collaboration with students and professionals from related and other academic disciplines. Year 3: Students in their final year are given the opportunity to undertake a significant and sustained individual development project. This will pull together all the previous experience strands of their study, and provide the tailoring of a portfolio of work that will act as your professional calling card into the industry.

Assessment method

Students will be assessed through the completion of practical and written work including essays and a range of individual or group artefacts, presentations, projects and reports that focus on practical and business skills.
