Course summary

We are seeking accreditation for this course to be a HTQ. The role of the Associate Ambulance Practitioner (AAP) is found in the wider Emergency and Urgent Care (E&UC) setting where you will be working within a defined scope of practice, within an ambulance (NHS/CQC approved) service. Your day-to-day activities will be to attend emergent, urgent, or facility to facility transfers, as the primary response tasked by the Ambulance Operations Centre (AOC) and may include driving responsibilities. As a Level 4 clinician there are additional responsibilities above that of an ambulance support worker (ASW) placed upon you so your studies will reflect the demands on problem-solving and decision-making, professional conversations, presenting arguments that advocate for the service users care, to be able to assess, treat, and manage the needs of the service-user in a variety of environments and situations. You will be expected to work safely and effectively within local policies and procedures regarding decision-making and discharge. You will be expected to undergo continued professional development to maintain existing skills and develop new appreciations for your practice. As part of your studies, you will have a preceptorship period where you will be supervised by a Registered Professional / Senior Clinician and on successful completion of this final phase you will then be permitted to work within your full scope of practice, being accountable for all decisions you make or direct, depending on the grade of clinician you work with and whether they are junior or senior to you. This will include working in the rear of an ambulance as the responsible clinician. Students involved in ambulance-based studies with us have a strong employability outcome and go on to continue their studies to Level 6 and beyond in Paramedic science or other health and social care specialities. Here, at the University of Bedfordshire you will be supported to progress as far as you want to go by both academic and non-academic subject specialists. On successful completion of this course and your preceptorship, you will receive a Level 4 Certificate in Associate Ambulance Practitioner (AAP). Work-based learning: The course provides you with work-based experience in order to practice as an associate ambulance practitioner at the point of qualification. The course includes both theoretical and practical components in practical and simulated environments ensuring you qualify with the competence and confidence to work effectively in practice. Expertise: The course is designed and delivered in partnership with local employers and service users and offers a competency–based curriculum based upon the NHS Constitution and its inherent values. Our external partners and practice experts regularly contribute to the course delivery and its support, providing additional specialist knowledge and experience.
