Course summary

This degree gives you an in-depth understanding of economic theory and the skills you need to work in sectors like finance, commerce and industry. Our graduates earn an average starting salary of £29,100 within 15 months of graduating (latest Graduate Outcomes 2019/20, published in 2022). You'll learn from experts whose research has influenced international policy in areas like labour markets and the pharmaceutical industry. You'll be able to design your own experiments in the behavioural economics laboratory and experience a realistic trading room environment in our Financial Lab (FinLab). You'll also have the freedom to shape your studies by choosing optional modules to suit your interests or career plans. You could also: • Spend a year in employment • Gain vital work experience on a Student Innovation Project • Spend a semester abroad • Gain exemptions from professional accounting bodies and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries Choose Southampton and you'll also be joining a department ranked Top 15 in the UK for Economics and Econometrics (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023).

Modules

You will study various topics covering the fundamental aspects of Economics. You can choose between a number of 'pathways' through the degree, to reflect your background and interests. Module choices in year one depend on whether you have studied economics at A level. Some of the modules you may study include Principles of Macroeconomics; Econometrics with Big Data; Behavioural Economics. Qualification requirements

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an equivalent standard to the A level applicant. As A level Mathematics is required for this programme, all equivalent qualifications also need an equivalent of A level Mathematics, grade B.
